Laser Assisted Periodontal Surgery

Dr. Friedberg is committed to both outstanding clinical outcomes and patient comfort.  For optimal patient comfort, he is excited to offer Laser Assisted Periodontal Surgery (LAPS).

LAPS is an alternative to conventional periodontal surgery. One reason many patients choose to proceed with LAPS is due to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure (minimal bleeding, no sutures, decreased pain). Other reasons patients choose to have LAPS is due to compromised medical histories (on blood thinners), to minimize gum recession associated with conventional surgery, and less time away from work and family.

The following is a list of frequently asked questions regarding LAPS:

Q:           “But my doctor said he’d have to pull my teeth because they are so loose and I don’t want to do that.”

A:            At times periodontal disease has progressed to the point where little or no bone  remains to support your natural teeth, and extractions are the best course of treatment.  However, we have had success treating many teeth that other doctors have condemned.  At your consultation visit, we will perform a thorough examination to determine if you are a good candidate for LAPS.  Our goal is to provide predictable, long lasting results.

Q:           “How much more is the laser?

 A.           The laser is comparable to the fee for conventional periodontal surgery.  It is not more because it is new technology.  Our fee has actually been less than some of the offices using the conventional technique.

Q:           “How will I feel after the laser surgery?

A:            You may experience some ache, throbbing or soreness.  The doctor will prescribe some pain medication to take care of any discomfort you may experience.

Q:           “How many appointments will I need?”

A:            Usually one to two treatment visits and a couple of post-operative visits.  Dr. Friedberg and your dentist will then prescribe visits with a hygienist every three months to keep up what he has started.

Q:           “Will my insurance cover this?”

A:            We do not use any special codes because it is laser.  We use the same codes that every office uses.

Q:           “Do you offer financing?”

A:            We offer Care Credit Financing.  It is a credit card for medical as well as dental services which is easy to qualify for.  We would be glad to assist you in the application process.

Q:           “How do I know this will work?  I had surgery 4 years ago, and I now need it again.”

A:            The doctor can answer all of your questions regarding treatment.  We allow ample time during your consultation for you to ask questions.  You can meet the doctor and staff and have a demonstration of the laser performed for you.  You may take comfort in knowing that Dr. Friedberg uses the only laser with FDA clearance for treatment  of periodontal disease.
